On-Campus Recruiting Guidelines

Research the company and position before the interview. It is important that you browse the company’s website and learn some basic facts about the company and as much as you can about the position for which you are applying.

To prepare for typical questions, schedule a mock interview with a career counselor or peer advisor. This is an excellent way to practice answers to common questions asked by recruiters. Call 977-2828 to schedule this session.

All interviews are held at the Academic Resources Center, 1st floor. Please plan on arriving ten minutes early. Notify the receptionist at Career Services that you are there for an interview. The staff member will direct you to sign in at the interview schedule located by the interview rooms.

Dress professionally. Although the interview is held on campus, recruiters expect job candidates to be dressed in a business suit. For men, wear a dark colored suit, a conservative dress shirt and tie, and polished dress shoes. For women, the appropriate interview attire is a pants or skirt suit with a professional shirt and closed-toe shoes. When in doubt, dress conservatively!

Prepare two to three questions to ask the recruiter. Usually at the conclusion of the interview, you will be asked if you have any questions. Asking questions shows your interest in the position; however, never ask about salary at this point in the interview process. If all of your prepared questions were answered during the interview, ask about the timeline when a decision will be made.

After the interview, send a thank you note. This note can be in the form of e-mail, typed, or handwritten. A thank you is a common courtesy and can give you the opportunity to show the recruiter that you appreciated their time. A good way to get the recruiter’s name and address is to ask for a business card at the end of the interview.

Always show up for a scheduled interview! If you fail to attend an interview, you will need to write a letter of apology to the employer and give a copy of this letter to Career Services. Until that time, you will be suspended from participating in OCR.

If you must cancel the interview for any reason, notify Career Services as soon as possible!

Remember, you are not only representing yourself during on-campus recruiting, you represent Saint Louis University as a whole.
